Non-Surgical Gum Therapy

Do your gums bleed when you floss? If so, you may have gum disease. Gum disease is a slow progressing infection that can be hard to notice at first. Because most patients won’t experience any noticeable symptoms, they may have gum disease and not even realize it. Early signs of gum disease include inflamed and bleeding gums. As it becomes more serious, deep pockets will form and your teeth will eventually loosen and fall out. This is why routine dental checkups are so important because the dentist can check for and treat oral problems before they become serious.

For moderate forms of gum disease, we may recommend non-surgical gum therapy. This involves using a number of techniques, including curettage, root-planing, and local medication. These techniques are usually done at the same time.

The first step to stop the infection from spreading is by injecting a local medication into the infected sites. This medication helps to keep the infection contained.

Curettage involves removing the infected soft tissues to stop the chronic infection. This gives the soft tissues time to heal.

Root planing removes and smooths tiny amounts of the root surface so that they can heal.

You will be given an anesthesia to ensure you are completely comfortable during your procedure.

We are also proud to offer a new laser system, called the Sol laser. The advanced laser system allows us to safely perform minor gum surgeries and other preventative procedures. The laser can reduce the bacteria in the gum pockets which can help to stop the infection.
