The prospect of getting braces can, naturally, be a sensitive one for many teens. The sensitivity  is often compounded by a few myths that actually have no basis in reality.

Myth: Wisdom teeth cause overcrowding and the need for braces.
Although this is a common belief, there is actually little evidence to substantiate it. If this were true, your teeth would not become crowded after wisdom teeth are removed. Some people who have had their wisdom teeth removed or who never developed their wisdom teeth have still experienced problems with crooked teeth. The simple truth of the matter is that teeth often have a tendency to drift toward the front over time, regardless of the presence of wisdom teeth.

Myth: In order to get straight teeth, I need metal braces.
This is no longer the case. Thanks to advanced technology, there are now many options that can help you achieve a beautiful, straight smile without the need for metal braces. One of those options is Invisalign, a system in which clear aligners help to straight your teeth without anyone knowing that you are wearing them. Invisalign is not appropriate for all situations, however. The best way to find out if this method is an option is to schedule an Invisalign consult appointment.

Myth: I need to wait until I lose all of my baby teeth before I see an orthodontist.
This is not necessarily true; everyone's situation is different. Depending on your situation, the dental team at Bella dentaire may recommend seeing an orthodontist earlier. It is not uncommon for many children to lose their incisors and then experience a year or two wait before losing the remainder of their teeth. Due to the fact that a child's bones are still soft, treatment performed during childhood is often shorter in duration than treatment during adulthood.  Annual check-ups help to monitor growth and parents are kept up-to-date with all the various options available.

Myth: Traditional Braces and Invisalign Aligners are only beneficial for getting a straight smile.
While one of the benefits of orthodontics treatments is certainly a beautiful smile, there are actually many other advantages. Along with a straight smile helping to improve a child's self-esteem, orthodontics can provide a number of health benefits that can last into adulthood.

Myth: When teeth are not crowded, they are much easier to clean and floss, thus preventing future dental problems.
Teeth and jaws that are properly aligned also provide the basis for improved dental functioning. An improper bite and misaligned teeth can often result in abnormal wear and strain on the jaws that can lead to chronic pain in the head, face, neck, and jaws. Protruding teeth are also at a greater risk for breakage and trauma later in life, resulting in the need for expensive cosmetic dentistry.

It is certainly understandable that teens and tweens may experience some apprehension about seeing a dental specialist. Proper treatment now can provide children with the basis for a beautiful, healthy smile that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
